Terrence Roberts, 2008 MLK Diversity Banquet Speaker
A 15 year old eleventh grader when he joined eight other students and became one of the first nine black students to go to a formerly segregated public high school in Little Rock, he is now co-chairperson of the Master’s in Psychology Program at Antioch University. A graduate of California State University at Los Angeles (BA), and UCLA (MSW), Dr. Roberts obtained his Ph.D. in psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. A much sought after speaker, Dr. Roberts also heads a management consultant group dedicated to improving human relations in the workplace. Since 1998 he has been the official desegregation consultant for the Little Rock, Arkansas School District, and provides similar services to school districts around the nation.
“Lessons From Little Rock”
In this address, Dr. Roberts will explore salient lessons from Little Rock, 1957, that inform our decision making in the twenty first century. We continue to be confused by the construct of race, our concept of community is embryonic, the primary tasks of culture elude us, and our spiritual compass seems to be in great need of calibration. Public schools are becoming resegregated and private, uniracial schools are cluttering the horizon. The lessons from Little Rock can lead us to greater understanding and awareness about these issues.
